John J. McDonnell, Ph.D.
John J. McDonnell is a founder of McDonnell Boehnen Hulbert & Berghoff LLP. His patent practice primarily focuses on biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, diagnostics, and related health care matters, with a particular focus on advising emerging high-technology companies and groups investing in such companies. Noted for his creative strategies and alternative approaches to intellectual property business objectives, he has extensive experience in complex lawsuits involving major biotechnology products.
Dr. McDonnell has more than 30 years of experience in pharmaceutical and diagnostic patent matters. He was formerly chief patent and trademark counsel at G.D. Searle and Company, where he secured a five-year extension of the Aspartame patent and directed the brand ingredient strategy for NutraSweet. He was also head of the diagnostic patent operations at Abbott Laboratories for five years.
Before entering the practice of law, he was an assistant professor of chemistry at the Illinois Institute of Technology.
