Joey C. Yao is a partner with McDonnell Boehnen Hulbert & Berghoff LLP. Mr. Yao concentrates his practice in intellectual property law with a specific focus on patent law matters including mechanical, electromechanical, biomechanical, software and computer technologies.

Mr. Yao handles a range of intellectual property matters for his clients, including preparing and prosecuting patent applications and providing strategic counseling on the development and management of intellectual property assets.

Mr. Yao strives to prepare and prosecute patent applications that increase the commercial relevance of his clients’ patent portfolios, making them stronger players in the marketplace.

Mr. Yao provides analyses of the intellectual property landscape in which his clients operate in order to help guide their business decisions. In some cases, this may involve conducting due diligence regarding the acquisition or licensing of intellectual property assets. In other cases, this may involve preparing clearance opinions to shape a client’s decisions on the direction of R&D. He consistently works with clients to study the intellectual property being developed by others in the same industry, which enables his clients to make stronger business moves.

Prior to joining MBHB, Mr. Yao was the founder of a technology consulting company and a technology director at an Internet start-up. This experience taught him that his clients are not truly served unless the results of his work help to advance their business goals.
