New MBHB Artificial Intelligence Group to Help Clients Navigate Developing Technologies

Full-service intellectual property law firm MBHB recently launched an artificial intelligence (AI) practice group. Headed by Michael Borella, Ph.D., and Joshua Rich, the new practice group will help clients manage intellectual property issues and challenges related to AI.

“The recent explosion in generative AI tools presents opportunities for great innovation but also risks to organizations’ intellectual property assets,” Borella said. “It’s imperative that organizations implement proper policies and protections to avoid IP loss. Drawing on our firm’s technical expertise in AI as well as our experience helping companies secure and enforce IP rights for their innovations, we will guide organizations throughout their AI journeys.”

MBHB has been involved in AI-related counseling for over 15 years, a practice that has grown dramatically with the rise of generative AI models. Relying on this deep experience, the firm will continue to support clients across the full scope of IP issues related to AI. This work includes patent prosecution and litigation for AI-based innovations, generative AI-related copyright advising and litigation, the development of AI-usage and data privacy policies that protect valuable company information and innovations, and counsel on emerging AI-related state and federal regulations.

“Our clients are looking for guidance as they work through the complex legal issues that accompany the rise of AI,” Rich said. “Whether a client is adopting AI tools to improve internal efficiency or developing AI-powered innovations, our aim is to help them make progress toward their business goals and avoid undue risk to their IP assets.”

Borella, who has a doctorate in computer science, spent more than a decade in the software industry before becoming an IP attorney. He prosecutes patents and provides counsel to clients on patent eligibility, validity, infringement, and litigation matters. Rich is an experienced IP trial lawyer who leads the firm’s trade secrets practice group. He has litigated cases involving patent, trademark, and copyright issues in federal and state trial and appellate courts. The MBHB AI practice group will support clients across industries, including high tech, manufacturing, medical devices, and life sciences.
