MATTER Workshop: Understanding Copyrights and Work-for-Hire Agreements
Copyright law is an important area of intellectual property law for startup employees to understand. Where patent law protects inventions, copyright law protects original works of authorship, including websites, articles, images and videos. Under copyright law, the party creating the work typically owns the copyright. The work-for-hire doctrine, however, is an important exception, which results in the employer – not the employee – being considered the author.
